Member of the SAP BASIS team.

Responsible for the end to end design and delivery of the SAP technical components on complex SAP projects.

Involvement is from initial technical architecture design, build, test, deployment and hand over to operational run.

Clients include:

  • NATS (written technical input into a proposal involving Virtual Machines)
  • NATS (gave technical advice on sizing of a Virtual Machine environment)
  • Centrica Energy & Centrica Storage Limited (BASIS lead – was going to manage a team of BASIS people to do the work, but the scope of the project changed, so Paul got another SAP BASIS Administrator onto the project and worked with him to build a new SAP environment for Centrica Storage Ltd, based on the Centrica Energy SAP systems)
  • Hitachi Rail (provided technical knowledge and guidance)
  • Centrica Energy (covered for Gaye Berry for 2 weeks, then went on to provide further assistance. Proved that LVM could actually be used (the project originally thought that it could not be))
  • Surrey County Council (stepped in at very short notice, to rebuild a production SAP Solution Manager system on Windows Server and DB6. Included installing and patching DB6)
  • HOPE (provided SAP BASIS technical assistance over phone and e-mail)
  • Wilko (SAP BASIS lead – identifying SAP performance and reliability issues, then presenting recommendations to the business, as well as promoting getting additional Capgemini staff on-site if required)
  • Southern Water (technical go-live review of a new customer facing SAP system)
  • NHS24 (patched a number of SAP systems)
  • Viridor (implemented SAP Fiori, installed and upgraded SAP systems, managed risk, SIT cutover, managed UK SAP BASIS resource and offshore SAP BASIS resource whilst they were onshore)
  • Rolls-Royce (SAP BASIS team manager)

  • Designed and implemented web service strategy, including implementation of EP, ITS, Web Dispatcher and SSL
  • Liaising with external contractors and companies and managing those resources
  • Member of the Barclays SAP Strategic Governance Team – identifies mid to long-term business requirements and ensures that the technical infrastructure is in place
  • Applying security to servers and data transport layers to meet strict Barclays standards
  • Planning and designing new processes or solutions which address the business requirements, whilst ensuring the overall integrity of the SAP system. This requires close liaison with all business units and projects impacted by SAP
  • Providing on-call, out of hours support for all Barclays SAP systems (including R/3, BW, SEM, EP, SAProuter, Web Dispatcher and Esker)

Leading role in introducing new technologies, building new end-to-end systems and managing the operational integrity of the business systems solutions.

Main responsibilities:

  • Team leader of 2 full-time members of staff and management of contractors during short-term projects. Duties include interviewing and selection, management, time control
  • Administration and development of SAP EP, BC and ITS environments
  • Successfully designed and implemented secure stand-alone connections between remote sites and local SAP servers via the Internet using ADSL, CITRIX, IAC clients and WYSE terminals. Liaised with Barclays security to develop a plan for a secure, robust solution which would be integrated into the Barclays WAN (would be a first for Barclays Bank)
  • Production support consisting of problem solving on interface failures, exports and other technical incidents. Involves discussions and contact with the business area affected by the problem and our own support areas

SAP BASIS Team, Industrial Placement Position (Grade IT8)

Joined as a junior member of the SAP BASIS team whilst on an industrial placement year from University (I was the SAP Centre’s first placement student – they have continued to have placement students since then):

  • Replaced an external contractor to manage the rollout from SAP GUI 4.0b to 4.6d to the Barclays group (worldwide) as part of the Group Wide Rollout Project. Spent 4 months visiting Barclays Bank Strategic Business Units around the UK to provide technical expertise in multiple IT environments
  • Sole responsibility for 2nd level support for users technical problems with regards to SAP issues (including GUI, printers, firewalls and Excel add-ins)
  • Sole responsibility for Windows LAN administration of 80 staff

  • BTEC National Diploma – Computer Studies
  • 9 GCSE’s including English, Mathematics and Physics
